WOODLAND SUMMER FLOWERS
08/08/2024
Whilst we tend to think of spring for wild flowers in our broad-leaved woodlands before there is too much shade at ground level, high summer is also a great time to see woodland flora, especially along paths and rides where the sun can shine through.
Some I saw on a recent short walk through an ash wood in the Midlands included foxglove, honeysuckle, enchanter’s nightshade, wild teasel, marsh ragwort, betony, great and rosebay willowherbs, nipplewort, large bindweed, wild angelica, upright hedge-parsley, herb-robert, meadowsweet, agrimony, hedge woundwort, pendulous sedge, tall melilot, creeping cinquefoil, wood sage, betony, perforate and pale St. John’s-worts, and of course brambles in profusion – prickly but with promise of delicious fruit.

Here are some photos of flowers in the wood. Can you name them all? (They are not all at the same scale.)
Betts Ecology’s woodland sites are managed to promote a wide range of wild flowers through all the seasons. Many of our sites have at least a small clump of trees and several have extensive woodland. Taking a walk through them should reward you with a selection of wild blossoms at almost any season.
