CASCADING TIPPING POINTS
22/07/2025
As promised, this week I have continued a discussion about Tipping Points with a focus on how they can cascade.
Cascading Effects (aka “Domino Tipping”)
Once one system tips (e.g. Greenland), others are pushed closer to their thresholds. For example:
- Greenland melt → Weakens AMOC
- AMOC slowdown → Disrupts Amazon & African monsoons
- Permafrost thaw → Adds to global warming
This creates a “Hothouse Earth” scenario, where feedbacks lock in long-term warming of 4–5 °C, even if emissions stop.
Key Insight:
The most urgent thresholds sit between 1.5–2 °C warming, which is why scientists stress cutting emissions sharply this decade. Positive tipping points (e.g. renewable energy adoption, ecosystem restoration) could counteract these risks.
Below is a diagrammatic representation of the cascading effects of these tipping points.

Inextricably entwined with all this are the shocking worldwide adverse impacts of ecologically toxic herbicides, pesticides and pollution, not to mention the overarching issue of the unsustainable growth of the human overpopulation.
Betts Ecology, as a scientific practice, is collectively only too well aware of these shocking environmental situations which are deteriorating before our eyes. We do what we can to spread the word and support campaigning by, for example, Greta Thunberg, who does much to help — but the world’s politicians need to COLLABORATE AND GET A GRIP! It is still not too late but we are in the last chance saloon.
