Macro-Invertebrates as ecological indicators

Background
When sites are assessed for their ecological and nature conservation status, entomology is all too often ignored. Yet the representation of invertebrate groups such as insects, spiders, molluscs, crustaceans, etc. can provide vital information on a site’s biological diversity and ecological health Betts Ecology never ignores entomology and, because we have in-house entomologists, when surveying we always consider if the site presents “triggers” for a more in-depth examination of macro-invertebrate populations. This information helps planners, landowners and clients make good decisions about biodiversity protection and statutory nature conservation compliance.

Operations
Betts Ecology primarily focuses on groups that are readily observable and determinable by entomologists. Lepidoptera, Odonata, Coleoptera and Hymenoptera are almost always examined, with other groups according to the site’s characteristics or when aquatic habitats are involved. Field observation & searching, specialist trapping (pitfall, wine rope/chemical lures, light, yellow disc, pheromone, Malaise, etc.) and laboratory identification are some of our procedures. We have a large specialist library and reference collections.
Outcome
Site-specific, best practice compliant recommendations for sustainability, appropriate protection and enhancement to meet formal guidance and statutes through aggregation and interpretation of the data collected by Betts Ecology; extrapolation of wider ecological value from invertebrate population survey results.
