BETTS ECOLOGY CASE STUDY: HAZEL OR COMMON DORMOUSE
Background
Betts Ecology check for dormice as a matter of routine when surveying sites that may have suitable habitat (woodland and well-connected hedgerows with hazel, honeysuckle, etc.), especially in Wales and the southern half of England,
Client & Location
National Housebuilder, Somerset.
Operations
Betts Ecology surveyed for characteristic dormouse feeding signs and nests, and collected hair samples for microscopic examination. Project design included maintaining dormouse habitat and ecological connectivity for dormouse movement. Licensed dormouse handler/surveyor was on Betts Ecology team.
Outcome
Betts Ecology provided information to ensure project design avoided dormouse habitat and new residents were informed about dormouse conservation. Dormouse nest boxes were provided.
